Healthy and Deliciously Fragrant Hair with Coconut Oil

From Gwyneth Paltrow to Dr. Oz to your radiant neighbor, coconut oil is being hailed as a natural cure-all, both safe and effective (not to mention delicious) for your body’s head to toe needs. For now we’ll focus on its hair benefits, but don’t forget to try out its other dozens of uses, from lip balm, to skin moisturizer, to makeup remover.

It’s not just celebrities and beauty queens boasting about coconut oil, scientists are throwing their praiseful data on the bandwagon, too. A study reported that coconut oil was found to “reduce the protein loss remarkably for both undamaged and damaged hair when used as a pre-wash and post-wash grooming product.” Its greatest results were when used as a pre-wash treatment due to coconut oil’s hydrophobic (water-repelling) nature. When applied as a pre-wash conditioner, the oil inhibits water penetration of hair strands, which would cause the surface of the hair shaft to rise, exposing it to potential breakage.

For naturally dry or over-processed hair, coconut oil is effective at restoring moisture and strengthening weakened strands. For deep conditioning, massage a couple of tablespoons into clean, damp hair and scalp. If your hair is thin or tends to be oily, you might want to skip the scalp to avoid weighing it down. In any case, ends typically need the most attention. Let the coconut oil nourish your hair for 20-30 minutes. Cover with a shower cap or hot towel for extra-rich results. Shampoo the oil out when finished and relish in the silky aftermath.

Coconut oil is also full of lauric acid, which has anti-fungal properties that can remedy dandruff. Try massaging a small amount into your scalp and letting it sit for ten minutes or even overnight with a shower cap to reduce or prevent dandruff.
