Why You Should Switch To Soy Candles

Why You Should Switch To Soy Candles

As daylight hours get shorter and temperatures begin to dip, many of us turn to the simple pleasure of scented candles to create a warm, cozy ambiance in our homes.

As it turns out, most of the scented candles we have been lighting up emit various hazardous chemicals similar to the fumes released by automobile exhausts. The main offenders are paraffin wax and synthetic fragrances, which releases highly toxic benzene and toluene when burned and can lead to allergic reactions, respiratory problems, birth defects and cancer, not to mention the damage to our properties from the blackening soot.

In addition, many scented candles have lead-core wicks that create levels of airborne heavy metals that are much higher that which is considered acceptable for children and exceeds EPA pollution standards for outdoor air.

Are there safer alternatives out there? Yes, look for candles that use cotton or paper wicks, made with soy, beeswax, coconut wax or other paraffin-free options and are unscented or scented with essential oils

Here at Shop Conscious Beauty we offer some great options for those looking to switch out their conventional scented candles:
